Northern pike are one of our biggest attractions here at Way North Lodge. All four of our daily fishing lakes are abundant with Northern Pike from small to trophy size. Catching a Trophy Pike ranging anywhere from 36-50 inches is very common. Excessive quantities of food including Walleye, protein rich Lake Trout, Suckerfish and even smaller Northern Pike are what make these fish grow to incredible sizes.
Northern Pike are aggressive ambushing predators which will pretty much attack anything that swims in their path.
In early spring, Northern Pike spawn in the shallow waters of bays or creek mouths. Target these areas casting as tight to shore as possible varying your retrieval speeds to determine the striking patterns.
Post spawn, Northern Pike will target Walleye and Sucker spawning areas. Northern Pike move into these areas to replenish themselves for spawning as it provides them with an easy and abundant food supply. Trolling or casting in these selected areas will provide the best results. Lures of choice over the years have been flashy spoons, spinner-baits, soft plastic baits and slow wobbling crank-baits. Fishing this time of year can produce some of the most exciting fishing for Trophy Pike that we have to offer.
In summer as the water warms and the weed beds grow in lush and thick, Northern Pike tend to move into a little deeper water. Edges of submerged weed beds, rocky points, underwater reefs and small islands are the areas of choice. Isolate these areas and either troll or cast large crank-baits, jerk-baits and spinner-baits for the best results.
